Tunneling and underground technology have been a PB specialty
since the early days of the firm. Year after year, decade after
decade, PB's accomplishments have established technical milestones
in tunnel engineering and underground facility design. And our
staff has developed many of the guiding tools of the trade such
as the Tunnel Engineering Handbook, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Manual on Tunnels and Shafts in Rock and the Subway Environmental
Design Handbook.
Our projects represent nearly every type tunnel and underground
facility from highway; railroad and rapid transit tunnels
to fresh water, sanitary wastes, and stormwater tunnels; underground
power plants, defense and research facilities; waste storage;
and mine access and spans all engineering disciplines from
planning, design to construction and program management and
inspection services.
PB is also a recognized leader in the design of mechanical
and electrical tunnel systems, including ventilation, fire
protection, electrical power, lighting, plumbing and drainage,
communications, and life safety monitoring and control systems.
PB developed and edited the Subway Environmental Design Handbook
and updated the SES computer program, which today forms the
basis for accepted worldwide industry standards in analyzing
tunnel ventilation and environmental control systems.
PB, in joint venture also developed a Computational Fluid
Dynamics (CFD) computer simulation program, specifically tailored
for tunnel ventilation analysis and has long been utilized
by PB engineers to enhance their understanding of heat and
smoke migration in tunnels, stations and enclosed structures.
